Module 1 - ALevel Experimentations (Module 3 PAGs) Flashcards

(10 cards)

1
Q

List the equipment used in the determination of g using light gates

A
  • Electromagnet connected to a steel ball
  • 2 light gates vertically below ball connected to data logger
  • Metre rule to measure distance between light gates

2
Q

What is the method of collecting data for determining g

A
  • Position the lower light gate 1m below the top one
  • Turn off the electromagnet
  • Note the time taken for the ball to fall between the ball bearings on the data logger
  • Repeat to find mean values of time for that height
  • Repeat, decrementing the distance between the lower and upper gate by 0.05m

3
Q

Describe the graphical method of determining g

A

s = ut + 0.5at²
h = ut +0.5gt²,
- draw a graph of h against 0.5t², and the gradient is g

Q

What is the method of collecting data to determine terminal velocity

A
  1. Mark the tube at regular intervals of distance
  2. Hold a bearing over the liquid and drop it from rest
  3. At the time of release start a timer
  4. Lap the timer at each marked interval
  5. Calculate the average velocity for the different intervals

7
Q

What are two things you could improve with the terminal velocity experiment and why

A
  • Use a taller tube allowing the ball to travel at terminal velocity for longer
  • Use larger distance intervals to reduce uncertainty in distance and time

9
Q

Describe the method for collection of data when dewtermining Young Modulus

A
  • Measure the diameter in different places in different orientations along the wire and take a mean
  • Place a mark on the wire on where original length will be measured
  • Measure the original length from the clamp to the mark on the wire when taut
  • Repeatedly add 100g masses to the wire measuring the new length to the marker each time until you have 7 readings

Q

What is the graphical method to determine terminal velocity

A
  • For each mass: 1. force applied is mg
    2. the extension is length measured-original length
    3. Measure stress = F/A
    4. Measure strain = x/l
  • Draw a stress strain graph and the gradient in the elastic region is the young modulus
