Biopsychosocial

Psychological: emotions, attitudes, perceptions, etc.

Biological: Medication, immune response, genetic, etc.

Social: Social support, family background, physical exercise, etc.

What is the difference b/ween pain and nociception?

A

Pain: experience. Potential or actual tissue damage (e.g., nervous system sensitization, thoughts and feelings)

Nociception: Neural process of encoding noxious stimuli (e.g., tissue damage, lacerations, degenerations, etc.).

Pain is NOT nociception

How is the tx impacted depending if the pain is associated w/ nociception or not?

A

Nociception: To treat pain, we treat tissue.

Pain not associated w/ nociception: Treat non-tissue damage factors (e.g., thoughts, catastrophizing, anxiety, etc.) –> Tx: CBT, pain neuroscience education
