Part 2 Flashcards

Part 2 of notes (12 cards)

1
Q

What is the 10 percent rule?

A

The consumer of something only gets 10% (Ex: cow eats 100 pounds of corn, I eat that cow, I only get 10% of the energy I would have gotten if I had just eaten the corn.

Q

Where did the energy go?

A

the energy went into helping the cow live, its body working.

the 10 percent rule continues to apply. plants get eaten by a mouse (100% of energy), mouse get eaten by a lizard (10%), lizard gets eaten by a small bird(1%), small bird gets eaten by a big bird(0.1%).

Q

What is DDT?

A

A pesticide that was really good at killing bugs, and with no side effects to other animals(tested)! Bioacumulation happens, the levels of it building up. Eventually it gets to eagles, too much of it in them makes no calcium get in their eggs. Eggs are floppy and easily get crushed when the mother eagle sits on it and crushes it.

DDT on plants→ to bugs → to lizards → to small birds → to eagles (huge build up).

Q

Explain the Carbon Cycle

A

Whenever something is burned for energy (humans, cars, fires) carbon dioxide is released. It goes into the atmosphere, plants get it & turns it back into carbon dioxide, plants get eaten and burned for energy.

Q

Explain the Greenouse Effect

A

lets in energy from the sun in the form of light, but keeps the heat. Carbon dioxide & other greenhouse gasses keeps the heat in. Over the past 200 years we have encrusted our burning. Too much carbon dioxide for the plants to keep the balance.

Q

Explain the Nitrogen Cycle

A

Plants need nitrogen. 80% of your air is nitrogen but plants can’t get it.

Q

Explain how energy goes in and out of the ecosystem.

A

It goes in in the form of light.
It goes out in the form of heat.
It changes from chemical reactions.
Light entering is the start of an energy flow.
