2
Q

What are the limiting factors of population?

A

Limits population size, can be biotic (disease, predators, ect) or abiotic (space, oxygen, ect)

3
Q

Density dependent vs density independent

A

Density dependent: disease
Density independent: temperature

Q

Things that determine population size:

A

Mortality rate (how fast things die)
Natality rate (how fast things are born)

Q

What causes a population to crash?

A

Population gets too high then hits a limiting factor

Q

What is R Reproduction Strategy?

A

Fast (mice, doesn’t raise children for long. Just has as many as possable)

Q

What are Age populations pyramids?

A

Graphs that show the amount of people in a population and their age. Can show whether or not a population is growing or shrinking

Q

What is Genetic Diversity?

A

(difference in a single population).

Ex: German shepard, very little genetic diversity. Most will have/have hip problems.

Ex: If a species is almost extinct, humans intervene and start breeding them and get their population back up to a good size there will be very little genetic diversity.

15
Q

What is Species Diversity?

A

(difference in a community)

Ex: potato famine in Ireland. Everyone was growing potatoes, almost no species diversity. Potato disease hits, most of the crop dies.

16
Q

What is Over Exploitation?

A

(over use): Over fishing, over hunting, over harvesting (not harvesting crops, things like chopping down trees).

17
Q

Habitat Loss / Destruction

A

Draining wet lands, climate change.
Fragmentation: Buildings, roads, farms. They break an ecosystem into smaller places, animals need more space. They also need migration paths.

18
Q

Conservation

A

use renewable vs nonrenewable. (use wood farms instead of just copping down forests)

19
Q

Decrease fragmentation

A

build those bridges over roads like the one in Canada. Pay farms to make gaps in their fences to let them through, make paths so the animals don’t have to go all the way around.

20
Q

Pollution

A

DDT (eagles), fertiliser (eutrophic/algie), invasive species (pythons in the everglades florida)
