What are the functions of the Skeletal System?
What are the three tissues in the Skeletal System?
Osseous (Inside)
- provide strength/protection
- Shaft (middle) of bone
Spongy Bone (Inside)
- Aids in blood cells production
- Ends of long bones
Cartilage (Outside)
- Aids in strength and flexibility
- Absorbs shock
- Covers tip/ends of long bone
What is the frontal bone?
The front of the skull/forehead region
What is the temporal bone?
The side of the head next to your eyes
Behind your ears
What is the nasal bone?
The bone in your nose
(Nasal = nose)

The side of your upper nose closer to your eyes
(You pinch it in frustration)
What is the maxilla?
Top upper jaw
What is the mandible?
Lower moving jaw
What is the sphenoid?
Right above your cheekbone, lateral to the eyes
What is the coronal suture?
(Suture = cracks in the skull naturally there to allow some flexibility)
Separates the frontal and parietal
(Think crown)
*Can be seen from side and top view
What is the sagittal suture?
(Suture = cracks in the skull naturally there to allow some flexibility)
Separates the two parietal sides
*Can only be seen from top view
What is the parietal bone?
Top of skull
(You have two sides split by sagittal suture)
What is the lambdoidal suture?
Splits the parietal and occipital
What is the occipital bone?
The back bottom part of skull
What is the mandible?
Lower jaw
What is the maxilla?
Top jaw
What is the clavicle?
Collarbone
What is the scapula?
Shoulder blade
What is the sternum?
Middle breastbone
What are the ribs and its three types?
ribcage around lungs and heart
True ribs = one connection from spine to sternum
False ribs = connected to several by cartilage
Floating ribs = not connected to sternum
What is the humerus?
upper arm bone
What is the radius?
lower arm bone on outer side/thumbs
What is the ulna?
lower arm bone on inner side/pinkie
