Antagonistic pairs
Muscles that work together to create a movement
Agonistic pair
The other relaxes
Antagonistic pair
To allow the joint to work
Name the 4 antagonistic pairs and their locations
Biceps/Triceps (elbow)
Hamstrings/Quadriceps (knee)
Gastronemius/Tibialis anterior (ankle)
Gluteals/Hip flexors (hip)
Muscle fibres can be of two main types:
Slow twitch (type I) and Fast twitch (type II)
Slow twitch (type I)
Suit endurance activities - can work for long periods of time.
Fast twitch (type II) - can be broken down into two further types:
Type IIa and Type IIx
Type IIa
used in anaerobic work which can be improved through endurance training. Increase their
resistance to fatigue
Type IIx
How can different type of muscle fibres affect our sport?
We all have both types of fibre in our muscle but in different quantities, probably determined by our genes - and this may affect what sports we are ‘naturally’ good at.
Myoglobin:
A red pigment that transports oxygen to the muscles.
