What is a species
A group of similar organisms that can reproduce to give fertile offspring
What is speciation
The development of new species
When does speciation occur
When populations of the same species become so different that they can no longer successfully interbreed to produce fertile offspring
How does speciation occur due to natural selection and isolation
A population of species can be isolated when ther is a physical barrier like mountains of lakes
Conditions on either side of the barrier will be different
This means the populations will adapt to different environments due to natural selection
Eventually the different populations will have changed so much that they cannot interbreed as 2 new species have developed
Who developed the idea of speciation
Alfred russel Wallace
