What is RVSM?

A

RVSM is Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum airspace.
It exists between FL290 and FL410 and reduces vertical separation from 2,000 to 1,000 feet.

RVSM Equipment required

A

“2, 2, 1, 1” → Two, Two, One, One

This is the cleanest memory aid.

2 — Two independent altitude measurement systems
2 — Two altitude-reporting sources (1 transponder w/ Mode C/S)
1 — One altitude alerting system
1 — One automatic altitude control system (autopilot)

What altitude is Class A airspace?

A

Altitudes

Starts: 18,000 feet MSL (FL180)

Ends: 60,000 feet MSL (FL600)

Also includes all airspace overlying the waters within 12 NM of the U.S. coast above FL180.

What are the requirements for entering class A airspace?

A

“Class A = Above 18, Always IFR, Always Talking, Always Squawking.”

Above 18 = Starts at FL180

Always IFR = Must be on an IFR flight plan

Always Talking = ATC clearance required

Always Squawking = Mode C + ADS-B Out
