A persons idea of whom or what one is. Beliefs, values, faith and ethnicity are important aspects of identity
Ideology
A set of beliefs and values
Progressivism
Ideologies that advocate moderate political and social change through government intervention (L)
Factors that may influence identity and ideology:
Family, gender, environment, language, media, government, relationship to the land, etc.
Individualism
Characterized by freedom of an individual with a lack of government intervention. Individualism also includes private property and economic freedom and is a key value of classic liberalism (R)
Collectivism
A societal policy based on the greater good of the people. A collective economy aims to reduce economic inequalities through social programs, and the promotion of the group over a single individual (L)
Liberal Party
A centrist party that supports things like progressivism, affirmative action, advocating for marginalized groups, and an increase on spending for social programs.
Conservative Party
A right-wing traditional party that supports lower taxes, and supply side economics. They also favour slow and gradual social progress
New Democratic Party (NDP)
A left-wing political party that favours increased taxation, along with corporate tax. They advocate for even more social programs than the liberal party, and aim to provide a safety net for all Canadians
The Bloc Quebecois
A political party that promotes Quebec’s regional interests by advocating for increased sovereignty
The Green Party
A political party that is mainly focused on environmental issues including carbon tax, global warming, etc.
Thomas Hobbes
Believed that humans were not evil, but selfish by nature. He believed in security over freedom, and thought that people should give power to a protecting ruler
John Locke
He opposed the absolute authority and felt like the individual should be self governing. He endorsed a representative democracy and outlined a social contract
Jean-Jacques Rousseau
Believed that people were born good but could be corrupted by society. He believed in direct democracy and that humans should be free and equal
Plebiscite
A yes or no question or vote for the people of a particular area that is NOT legally binding
Referendum
A yes or no question or vote for the people of a particular area that IS legally binding
