Governments that have total control over every aspect of the citizen’s lives
Authoritarianism
A form of government where authority rests in an elite group (Hitler, Stalin, etc.)
Machiavellianism
A ruler maintaining power through any means necessary. This means that they may be very generous at times, but in other situations can turn to violence and brutality
Autocracy
A political dictatorship where all of the power is held by one person
Oligarchy
A dictatorship where only a few influential members control the government. Most dictatorships are usually oligarchies (USSR)
Tyranny of the Majority
A dictatorship where the majority has political power and does not care or act on the rights of the minority group (Korea)
Tyranny of the Minority
A small group of people who have political control over the majority of the population (the monarchy)
Military Dictatorship
When military leaders run the country with total power. They usually obtain this power by violently overthrowing the government

Propaganda
The manipulation of information in order to get a desired result or reaction from people
Vision of the future
When dictators express a vision of what the nation should look like or what they want it to look like in the future. This convinces the citizens to follow them, as they promise to ‘create’ this vision
Controlled participation
When citizens are made to feel like they’re contributing to the nation by attending rallies or becoming part of the secret police
Scapegoating
Placing blame on a target group of people for societal problems that aren’t their fault (Stalin blaming the Holodomor on greedy Kulak farmers)
Pageantry
Highly colourful and extravagant state displays or ceremonies to show off the government (military rallies, parades, etc.)
Fear and Terror
Using terror to influence the will of people to steer away from dissidence and opposition of the government.
Radical
Using violence to achieve a change, that rejects the political and societal traditions of the past. This is a movement towards the far left side of government (communism)
