Q

Assumptions

A

Emmanuel says: “(Main original statement)”

Me, I say in response to try to prove him wrong: “Okay. but from your sentence, you have assumed that (insert proposed assumption)”

If your argument sounds correct, then choose ASSUMPTION MADE. If your argument seems wrong, then choose ASSUMPTION NOT MADE.

Q

when youre not sure what the answer is for assumptions

A

Change the sentence they give you (not the main statement, the one that your asnwer depends on) to a negative. If your new sentence does not match the main statement then choose assumption is made. If it does match the main statement then choose assumption is not made.

Q

What 2 things do you need to remember about Assumptions

A

1)WHAT I SAY HAS TO DIRECTLY RELATE TO WHAT EMMANUEL SAID, NOT A BROAD GENERIC VERSION!!

2)Do not use outside knowledge, just focus on what they have given you

Q

Deduction

A

Based on the explicit facts of the main statement, is the provided explicitly conclusion true? If true click follows, if not true click do not follow.

Step 1: Read the conclusion first

Step 2: Scan the main statement for the sentence/ sentences that directly relate to the conclusion they provided.

2a) TIPS: This is just really common sense DO NOT overthink it, just read it.

2b) TIPS: if it says in the statement X “only then” Y, that means Y causes X.

2c) TIPS: Pay attention to little details, its easy to overlook it sometimes

2d) Some = 1-99. Most = 51-100. Not all = 1-99

Step 3: Chose answer

Q

Inferences

A

Think of every conclusion as a guess about the world.
Your job is simply to decide:
How strong is this guess based only on what’s written?

1) True - the passage says this directly with no guessing

2) Probably True - the passage doesnt say this but everything we are told and the tone of the passage reasonably suggests its true

3) Insufficient data - if the passage does not give anything that would push you towards a true or false, put this if there is literally zero information in the passage pointing either way.

4) Probably False - the pasage does not say this, but everything we are told and the tone of the passage reasonably leans against it

5) False - the passage directly contradicts the conclusion

You are not allowed to use real-life knowledge, so take the passage to be factual.

the test expects you to interpret tone, context, implications, and what is reasonable given the passage

Q

Interpretation:

A

Take the main text to be factual and ask, does the conclusion implicitly state what the main statement says? If you believe that the conclusion follows beyond reasonable doubt (evidence so convincing that no logical person would have any doubt) from the paragraph given, you should choose “Conclusion probably follows”. If you think otherwise then choose “Conclusion probably does not follow”.
