Longitudinal Wave
wave that moves in the same direction as the oscillation of the medium’s particles.
Transverse Wave
a wave where the movement of the medium’s particles is perpendicular to the directions of the wave’s travel
Oscillate
to move or swing back and forth at a regular speed
wave
a disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another
What kind of wave can you create from a slinky?
transverse - the motion of the slinky is sideways to the motion along the slinky
What kind of wave can be demonstrated with a rope?
transverse - the motion in the rope is perpendicular to the direction of the wave
What kind of wave can be demonstrated with dominoes?
longitudinal - the dominoes fall in the same direction of the motion of the wave
Reflection
the change in the direction of a wave as it bounces off an obstacle or surface, such as a mirror or body of water
sound reflection
echo is a reflected sound produced by a wave that bounces off an object and returns toward the source of the sound
Light reflection
when the human eye discerns colors, it sees the parts of the light spectrum reflected from an object
refraction
when a wave meets the surface between two different materials or conditions, part of the wave reflects from the surface and another part continues but at a different speed
Refraction is the
bending of waves due to a change in speed as the wave changes mediums
sound refraction
we hear thunder when lightning is close to us, but we often do not for distant lightning because of refraction (sound travels slower at higher altitudes and bend away from the ground)
Light refraction
prisms reflect light an allow us to see the wavelengths of a light in visible (white) light. When light passes through a prism, the light is refracted and separated into different wavelengths creating a rainbow.
absorption
occurs when a given medium absorbs the wave’s energy which increases the temperature of the material.
Sound absorption
when the wave’s energy transfers to the particles of matter the wave is passing through.
Example: during a thunderstorm you see lightning but do not hear thunder because the air molecules absorb the sound wave.
light absorption
occurs when a light strikes a surface and the matter takes up the photon’s energy.
example: when light shines on an object and reflects color; a banana looks yellow because it reflects yellow and absorbs all other colors.
diffraction
a change in the direction of waves as they pass through an opening or around an obstacle
sound diffraction
when sitting in a classroom you can hear someone talking as they come down the hallway
light diffraction
light from the classroom window spreads out through the room
transmission
occurs when a wave passes through a given point or medium
sound and light transmission
as sound and light waves pass through a medium the waves transfer some energy to the particles of the medium
Law of Reflection
The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection.
echo
when a sound wave encounters a smooth, hard surface some of the energy of the wave may be reflected by the surface to travel in a different direction
