What was the secret police?

A

Arrests and executions carried out publically to intimidate potential opponents and create atmosphere of fear
-Cheka did not enforce laws they were dispensed ‘revolutionary justice’ which allowed them to act arbitrarily (done with reason not law)
-people with diffrent ideologies, citics and influencers on society were under surveillance
-political trials were set up because lenin feared the economic compromise of the NEP would lead to politicsl overthrow

-between 1917-23 cheka was responsible for 200,000 people
-the secret police grew enormosly from 40,000 in 1918 to 250,000 by 1921
(GPU claimed that protecting the revolutionary, so it gave itself the right to punish anyone it thought was an enemy to socialism wether they were or not

he belived that political terror was a temporary measure, which should be abandoned once the revolutionary was secure
