Why was it imporant for the Bolsheviks to supress religon?

A

Religon was followed by many people and can change ideologies and can build up revolutions against communism, lenin wanted people to follow his ideas so if they were in the Bible than people would follow them

Why did lenin criticise the Russian orthoodox church?

A

-religon stood for values that sometimes opposed communist ideas
- Religous groups were organised that were independant of the communist Goverment and therefor could organise oppositon of the Goverment

  • january 1918 Metropoliticain Vladimir was tortured and shot in Kiev
  • orthodox priests in Moscow mascarraded following a church decree excommunicating the Bolsheviks
  • Novemeber 1918 politburoo issued secret order to cheka sanctination the mass execution of priests
  • muslims encouraged to join communist party since communists were less antagonisitic towards islam as there was no link with tsarism

A

islamic organissation has loyalty from many people and therefor wanted to destroy the religon (claming that islam encouraged ‘crimes based on custom’) :
- closed mosques, turning them into sport clubs
- discouaged pilgrimages
- atacked islamic shrines
- started campagins against women wearing chador, traditional form of dress which included veils
- opened anti-islamic museums
