Q

Define agronomy

A

Foods that receive relatively low input for growing, however, need higher amounts of energy to make it palatable for humans.

Q

Define horticulture

A

Horticulture is foods that need high input while growing. However, they need low input during harvesting to make them palatable for humans.

Q

Define tragedy of the commons

A

Tragedy of the commons is when initial party rapes the land of resources, leaving sequential parties either with ruined or depleted resources.

Q

Compare and Contrast the study of Agronomy to Horticulture.

A

Agronomy is the study of field grown crops that require relatively low-input to grow but need high processing after harvest to make it palatable for humans or for usage in energy. Horticulture is the study of crops that require more intensive care during their growth, but require low processing for food. Examples of crops studied under agronomy would be wheat, corn, and soy beans; while horticulture grown crops can be strawberries, cabbage, and roses.

Q

Define the Tragedy of the Commons.

A

Tragedy of the Commons is where one party exploits a resource or location that upon their usage makes it unusable for others or later generations. One example of the tragedy of the commons is the church rock uranium mill spill. The US government and a private party rapidly processed uranium on Native American reservations in New Mexico without adhering to proper safety guidelines for the environment or for the people. A sledge pond containing massive amounts of uranium water escaped into the environment and river, causing hundreds of acres to be unusable and leading to generations of adverse health effects for the natives that lived on the river water.

Q

What has occurred scientifically, operationally and culturally to fuel the phenomenon of decreasing US farms despite population growth?

A

From 1910 to the early 2000s there has been a mass migration from rural areas to urban cities. This migration can be attributed to technology evolution, government subsidies, and more financial opportunities. Government subsidies incentivized larger ‘mega farms’, driving many farmers to sell their small family farms. 10% of all farms produce 70% of consumer goods in farming. Overregulation of crops and animals has also contributed to this phenomenon.

Q

What are the 5 major purposes of land preparation?

A
  1. Level the land where needed. 2. Incorporate crop residues, green manure, and cover crops. 3. Improve and maintain the tilth of the soil. 4. Help control weeds, diseases, and insects. 5. Help control erosion where needed.

A
  1. carbon (C) 2. hydrogen (H) 3. oxygen (O) 4. nitrogen (N) 5. phosphorus (P) 6. potassium (K) 7. calcium (Ca) 8. magnesium (Mg) 9. sulfur (S) 10. iron (Fe) 11. manganese (Mn) 12. molybdenum (Mo) 13. copper (Cu) 14. boron (B) 15. zinc (Zn) 16. chlorine (Cl)
17
Q

pH controls the availability of certain elements in the soil.

18
Q

Plants growing in soil or media with a low Cation Exchange Capacity would require less fertilization than those growing in a high Cation Exchange Capacity.

19
Q

________________ is most often used to raise the pH of an acid soil.

A

Agricultural Lime

22
Q

Soil testing and plant tissue testing is required to know what nutrients are needed for a crop.
