Must be informed and give consent. Dentist must provide patient with the enough info about their condition and explain all their options about their condition.

Written consent is the best.

Informed refusal
Patient denies care but provider thinks it’s necessary so you refer them to another provider. This is after you inform the patient of the likely consequences and obtained the patients informed refusal.
