What is the definition of extinction?

A

If a behaviour that was previously reinforced stops being reinforced, the behaviour will weaken or decrease. Works with behaviour previously maintained with positive reinforcement.

A

Behaviour may briefly increase in frequency, duration, or intensity after the reinforcement is eliminated.

A

A

What factors influence the effectiveness of extinction?

A
  • Previous schedule of reinforcement
  • Magnitude of previous reinforcement
  • Inadvertent reinforcement that occurs during the extinction phase
  • Extinction of unwanted behaviour should be combined with reinforcement of alternative behaviour
