Q

How is the tooth divided?

A

-crown: outermost layer of enamel; hardest layer of tooth. enamel = surface. dentine = mineralised structure inside enamel.
-neck: cementum = continuity of the enamel. cementum is hard, outermost layer protects the overall structure. dental pulp is B for dental health - contains vessels and nerves.
-root: root canal = where blood & innervation are going to inside of tooth. to supply nutrients + nerve support. alveolar bone = part of alveoli, region on maxilla and mandible where tooth = attached.

23
Q

What is the main function of the incisors?

24
Q

What do the canines do?

A

work with premolars to tear the food apart (second step after food is cut)

25
What do the molars do?
Grind food
26
Label the dental charting - see canvas pp diagram:
27
What is the distal surface?
furthest away point from midline (of teeth).
28
What is the medial surface?
Closest point to midline (of teeth).
29
Label the dental charting outlined by Palme's tooth numbering system - see canvas pp diagram:
30
Label the dental development - see canvas pp diagram:
31
What is deciduous dental development?
Primary dental development in childhood - usual age of eruption
32
What are the first teeth to emerge?
Lower central incisors are the first to emerge. These emerge 6-10 months
33
Which are the next teeth to develop?
-1st molars and canines (15-21 months) -2nd molars (<24 months).
34
By <24 months, how many teeth do we have?
Total: 20 (10 teeth in each arch)
35
Which teeth are NOT present by By <24 months?
*no premolar or 3rd molars*
36
Label the upper right and left quadrants of the dental charting deciduous - see canvas pp diagram:
-UPPER RIGHT QUADRANT: 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 E D C B A -UPPER LEFT QUADRANT 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 A B C D E
37
Label the lower right and left quadrants of the dental charting deciduous - see canvas pp diagram:
-LOWER RIGHT QUADRANT 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 E D C B A - LOWER LEFT QUADRANT 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 A B C D E
38
How many teeth are we born with?
None
39
When do teeth start to develop?
6 months onwards
40
Label the dental charting deciduous using the planer notation system (primary teeth): Maxillary arch and Mandibular arch, all 4 quadrants - see canvas pp diagram:
41
Label the upper and lower teeth - see canvas pp diagram:
42
Label the anterior few of the teeth - see canvas pp diagram:
43
What are the first adult teeth emerging?
molars, 6-7 years old
44
Which teeth emerge later in life (adult dentition)- even after 18 years old?
Wisdom teeth
45
What is normal dental occlusion?
upper teeth are slightly in front of lower teeth
46
What is class II malocclusion?
upper teeth are too far in front of lower teeth
47
What is class III malocclusion?
upper teeth are behind lower teeth
48
What is occlusion and malocclusion?
Alignment between upper and lower jaw => malocclusion = misalignment - difference in alignment is too pronounced.
49
Label the innervation of teeth - see canvas pp diagrams:
50
What nerve innervates teeth?
Trigeminal nerve - nerve number 5 (NB be familiar with this nerve - NB for face)
51
What are the main branches innervating the tooth?
-maxillary branch = innervating upper dentition -mandibular branch= innervating the mandibular - lower dentition
52
Label the innervation of teeth with nerves + smelling thing divided into upper and lower - see canvas pp diagrams:
53
What are supernumerary teeth?
You have another line of teeth emerging in your dentition - only happens at level of upper jaw. dental condition - related to developmental disorder.
54
What is microdontia?
Dental condition - related to neurodevelopmental disorder - Down syndrome: teeth too small.
55
What is periodontitis?
dental name for gum disease. due to poor hygiene, bacteria eating away at gums. leads to bleeding + eating away at alveoli part of gums
