11
Q

____ is the most accurate test in determining pulp vitality

A

Laser doppler flowmetry

involves passing light through the tooth into the pulp using a probe. The received output signal is then measured to determine the vitality of the pulp.

Q

For mandibular molars, the most suitable access preparation shape is ____

A

trapezoidal

mandibular molars are more square/rectangular-shaped due to them only having 2 roots, so their access preps will be somewhat square/rectangular

20
Q

For maxillary molars, the most suitable access preparation shape is ____

A

rhomboidal

maxillary molars are more triangular-shaped due to them having 3 roots and an oblique ridge, so their access preps will be somewhat triangular.

21
Q

For premolars and canines, the most suitable access preparation shape is ____

22
Q

For incisors, the most suitable access preparation shape is ____

A

Maxillary centrals - triangular
All others - ovoid

Maxillary is triangular due to the presence of a wide crown and a cingulum

23
Q

What is the most likely complication of non-vital bleaching?

A

Cervical root resorption

24
Q

What is the most definitive way to confirm a diagnosis of necrotic pulp?

25
Which bacteria dominate the microbiota in primary endodontic infections?
Obligate anaerobes
26
Which tooth is most vulnerable to perforation?
Maxillary 1st premolar due to its mesial concavity
27
Calcium Hydroxide pH
12.5 (very basic)
28
2 primary ingredients of MTA
Phosphate and calcium oxide
29
How thick should protective liners be? What is the preferred materials?
Minimum of 0.2 - 1.0 mm Calcium hydroxide
30
What material is used directly on the exposed pulp during direct pulp cap?
Calcium hydroxide (then a layer of RMGI on top of the CaOH, then the final restoration such as composite) *this is the same process as an indirect pulp cap*
31
How much pulp is typically removed during a partial pulpotomy? What hemostasis method should be used?
1-3mm (or more if necessary) Irrigation with sodium hypochlorite (bleach) or Chlorhexidine
32
What is the main purpose of a complete pulpotomy?
Temporary pain relief
33
What is the goal of apexogenesis?
To preserve pulp vitality and permit continued root development and apical closure of YOUNG IMMATURE teeth whose roots have not yet fully developed. *The process is basically a pulpotomy*
34
What is the purpose of a pulpectomy?
It's an ***interim*** non-vital pulp treatment performed before a full RCT can be accomplished ***You basically do a root canal, except you obturate the canal with Calcium Hydroxide instead of gutta percha***
35
What is the purpose of apexification?
It is performed to stimulate the formation of calcified tissue at at the open apex of pulpless teeth. This is essentially the same thing as doing a RCT except the apical few mm of the canal is filled with CaOH or MTA to make a "plug", then gutta percha is placed on top of that, then the tooth is restored.
36
For any endo treatment, which 2 materials should usually be placed directly on top of exposed pulp?
CaOH or MTA
37
To diagnose root fractures, which radiographs should be taken?
1 occlusal film 3 PA's (1 straight on and 2 at a mesial and distal 15 degrees)
38
How do you treat apical and middle 3rd root fractures?
Flexible splint for 4 ***weeks***
39
How do you treat coronal root fractures?
Flexible splint for 4 ***months***
40
What is the typical pulpal outcome of intrusive luxations?
96% pulp necrosis
41
For an avulsed tooth, when should you remove debris and necrotic PDLs?
Only when the extraoral dry time exceeds 1 hour. If less than 1 hour, do not touch the root surface
42
If a tooth has been avulsed for more than 1 hour, what should be done before reimplantation?
Remove debris Remove necrotic PDL Immerse in 2% sodium fluoride for 20 minutes
43
What is the order and rate of pulp necrosis for the 5 different types of dental trauma? (concussion, intrusion, etc.)
Concussion - 2% Subluxation - 6% Extrusion - 65% Lateral Extrusion - 80% Intrusion - 96%
44
What is often described as "moth-eaten" appearance?
External root resorption
45
Another name for ankylosis and primary cause
Replacement resorption (because the PDL/PDL space is replaced with bone) Trauma
46
What is the most commonly used technique for internal bleaching of non-vital teeth?
Walking bleach
