RESULT:
How did Freud interpret these phobias?

1. Hans had fantasies and dreams about penises.
2. “Hans was afraid that a horse will bite him in the street and this fear is connected with him frightened of its large penis”
3. Hans didn’t like the horse because of the black bits around the mouth and the blinkers - Freud believes the horse represented his father (moustache)
4. Freud concluded that hans was afraid that his father would castrate him for desiring his mother.

Dad (=dad) would bite him (=castrate) as punishment.

How did Freud interpret these fantasies ?

Plumber: Hans imagined that a plumber had come & removed his bottom + penis but have him bigger ones.

Children: Hans imagined he had several imaginary children & when asked who the mother was he said “mummy and (daddy) you’re their granddaddy”.

Freud saw Hans phobias as an expression of the Oedipus complex, the fear began as an Oedipal conflict developed regarding him sleeping in his parents bed.

Hans had a dream that there was a big giraffe in the room (in the night) and a crumpled giraffe, Hands father took the crumpled giraffe away and sat on it.

Freud and Hans father believed that the long neck of the giraffe was a symbol for a large adult penis.
