Q

Propofol MOA: Propofol is a relatively selective modulator of ___ Type A receptors. Receptor activation causes transmembrane ___ conductance to increase leading to _____ of the postsynaptic cell membrane. This prevents ___ of impulses through the neuron and functional ___ of the postsynaptic neuron.

Propofol also potentiates activity at ___ receptors which partially contributes to ___ effect.

A
  • Relatively selective modulator of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) Type A receptors = principal inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain.
  • Receptor activation causes transmembrane CHLORIDE conductance to increase –> leading to hyperpolarization of the postsynaptic cell membrane –> therefore preventing transmission of impulses through the neuron and functional inhibition of the postsynaptic neuron.
  • Also potentiates activity at glycine receptors –> partially contributes to hypnosis effect
