Distribution Frames
Distribution Frames → Network connection points used to organize and manage cables between devices; includes the main distribution frame (MDF) and intermediate distribution frames (IDFs).
MDF
Main Distribution Frame → The central point in a building where external network connections and main switches or routers connect to internal cabling systems.
Patch Panels
Patch Panels → Rack-mounted panels with multiple RJ45 ports used to organize and connect network cables between wall jacks and network switches.
IDF
Intermediate Distribution Frame → A secondary distribution point that extends the MDF’s connections to different floors or building sections, often called the “comm room.”
Equipment Racks
Equipment Racks → Metal frames used to mount networking equipment; standard width is 19 inches, height is measured in rack units (1U = 1.75”), with common rack heights like 42U. Depth varies by equipment type.
Cooling a Data Center
Cooling a Data Center → Managed using HVAC systems with hot and cold aisle layouts; cold air enters the front (cold aisle), hot air exits the back (hot aisle), often aided by raised floors and containment systems.
Cable Infrastructure
Cable Infrastructure → Each desk or device connects via Ethernet cabling to a patch panel in the IDF; patch cables from the panel connect to switches, which then link back to the MDF — forming a structured, organized network.
Fiber Distribution Panel
Fiber Distribution Panel → A termination and management point for fiber optic cables that allows easy patching and protection of fiber connections.
Locking Cabinets
Locking Cabinets → Secure enclosures for network equipment or patch panels to prevent unauthorized access and protect critical hardware.
