What are naturalistic observations
Behaviours studied in a natural situation where everything had been left as it is normally- researcher doesn’t interfere
Eg- watching an infant play in their normal environment
What are controlled observations
Some variables in the environment are regulated by researcher- reducing naturalness
What are overt observations
The person being observed is aware of the observations- reducing naturalness
What are covert observations
Participants are unaware of observations
Eg- hidden cameras
What are participant observations
The observers is part of the group being observed
Eg- joining a gang
What are non participant observations
Observer is not part of group being researched and is watching or listening to behaviour
Pros of naturalistic observations
Gives realistic picture of spontaneous behaviour= higher ecological validity
Cons of naturalistic observations
Little control over extraneous variables
Pros of controlled observations
Observer can focus on particular aspect of behaviour
Cons of controlled observations
Control may make environment feel unnatural= change in behaviour
Pros of overt observation
Reduced ethical implications
Cons of overt observations
Participants are aware= lacks naturalness
Pros of covert observations
Participants unaware of observations= more natural
Cons of covert observations
Important ethical issues
Pros of participant observations
Provides special insight into behaviour
Cons of participant observations
More likely to be overt= issues of participation awareness
Pros of nonparticipant observations
Observers are likely to be objective
Cons of non participant observations
More likely to be covert= more ethical issues
