1️⃣ Main meaning: “I wonder…” • Acaba geliyor mu? → I wonder if he’s coming. • Acaba doğru mu? → I wonder if it’s true. It signals doubt or curiosity. ⸻ 2️⃣ Softening a question (very common) It makes questions more polite or less direct. • Acaba yardım edebilir misiniz? → I was wondering if you could help. Without acaba: • Yardım edebilir misiniz? (still polite, but more direct) With acaba: • softer, more tentative ⸻ 3️⃣ Expressing uncertainty in thinking • Acaba ne yapmalıyım? → I wonder what I should do. • Acaba onu aramalı mıyım? → Maybe I should call him? ⸻ 4️⃣ Where does it go? Usually: • At the beginning • Or right before the uncertain clause Most common: Acaba + question ⸻ 🧠 Important nuance Acaba does NOT mean “maybe.” For “maybe,” use: • belki Compare: • Belki gelir. → Maybe he’ll come. • Acaba gelir mi? → I wonder if he’ll come. Different feeling.
