Temporisation Flashcards

(19 cards)

1
Q

why is temporaisation sometimes a needed step?

A
  1. Endodontic procedures are time consuming
and often cannot be completed in one visit
  2. Having disinfected the canals we require a
    temporary restoration which will maintain
    this clean environment
  3. The mouth is full of bacteria so this
    restoration must seal effectively

3
Q

why is Non Setting Calcium Hydroxide used for temporisation?

A

1) High pH (12.5) – Antibacterial
and stimulates healing of boney lesions
2) Radiopaque (eg Barium Sulphate added)

4
Q

why is it risky that Non Setting Calcium Hydroxide has a high pH (although it is generally an advantage)?

A
  • if it goes beyond the apex
  • can cause necrosis to tissues in PDL

7
Q

what is the advantage of adding barium sulphate to Non Setting Calcium Hydroxide?

A

radioopaque - enables us to see the filling of the calcium hydroxide on X-ray

Q

what is the safest way to place the temporisation material (Non Setting Calcium Hydroxide) into a canal?

A
  • apply the non-setting calcium hydroxide onto the orifice of the canal and then try to spread it inside canal with paperpoints/ file/ spreader inside the canal

Q

what is the alternative way (NOT so safe) way to place the temporisation material (Non Setting Calcium Hydroxide) into a canal?

A
  • place it in with a syringe

Q

why is it risky/ unsafe to put the temporisation material into the canal with a syringe?

11
Q

why is it important that the Calcium Hydroxide used for temporisation is non-setting?

A

needs to be removed later on to continue endo tx

12
Q

during temporisation, why do we need to place a cotton wool pledget on top of the orifice?

A

Prevents temporary restorative material from lodging in canal orifice, which would make it difficult to remove without damaging the tooth

Pledget can be soaked in Ca(OH)2 to enhance antibacterial effect

13
Q

What are the size criteria of the cotton wool pledget placed in the orifice during temporisation?

A
  • needs to be large enough to not get into the canal and gets dislodged in
  • but not big enough that the temp filling placed on top is with a gap because of it

16
Q

what is the common material used for the temp filling during temporisation?

A

ChemFIll Rock (Reinforced glass ionomer cement)

17
Q

What are the properties of ChemFIll Rock (Reinforced glass ionomer cement) that make it good for a temporary filling during temporisation of RCT?

A
  • Self curing (NOT LIGHT CURED!!!) so can be placed in one increment
  • Sets quickly so work fast
  • Packable
  • Strong
  • Good radiopacity, and contrast white shade available for easy removal
18
Q

list the steps in Chemfil Rock Application when doing the temp filling during temporisation of RCT

A
  1. Activate for 2s
  2. Mix in amlagamator for 15s
  3. Place in ‘gun’ and apply to cavity
  4. Pack and shape, working time 1’30”
  5. Setting time 6 minutes
19
Q
