31
explain what MAPS & LMAG stand for and what they do?
Main Air Pressure Switch (5.4 rising 4.5 falling) MAPS will apply Emergency Brakes if air pressure drops to 4.5 Bar and Releases them when it rises to 5.4 Bar Low Main Air Governor recognises when air pressure is falling and switches compressor speed up on.

47
Differences between a 150/1 & 150/2?
• 150/2 has 2x alternators • no DVD in 150/1, DVD in 150/2 •AWS Full Isolation is Handle type where middle window is on 150/1 - AWS Full Isolation is on secondman side and is a flap like EBS • 150/1 is crew door is a slam door - 150/2 crew door is air controlled • 150/1 no gangway door - 150/2 gangway door • LCCB Trips on 150/1 in the front means engine shuts down, rear engine turns to idle means coasting to stop somewhere. no brake release if TW4 breaks LCCB Trips on 150/2 if front engine shuts down will still take power from rear, can get brakes still. Emergency Egress switches on alternate saloon doors on 150/1 emergency egress on every saloon door on 150/2 the shore supply on 150/2 is at the front, to the right of the BSI coupler, the shore supply on 150/1 is half way down the train
48

what does the Fuel pump governor do?
controls how much fuel is pumped
50
what does the aux heater do?
heats up the fuel via heating the coolant that runs alongside the fuel line in term heating the fuel up
51
tell me the components of the lubrication system ?
oil pump thermostat valve oil cooler (sends fuel the long way to cool) filter sump regulator value
52
what does the regulator value do on the lubrication system? name PSI’s
regulator valve monitors the pressure of the oil the idle is 10 PSI the max is 45 PSI and when ERS activates is 8 PSI
53
name some components of the coolant / hydrostatic oil system?
coolant tank mobury float ( monitors if coolant level if too low activates ERS) coolant pump thermostat radiator heater matrix hydrostatic pump hydrostatic thermostat radiator fan
54
on what side of the train is your MRPIC (main res pipe iso cock) ?
drivers side of train at the side near the cab
55
what side is the ECIC (Emergency Coupler Iso cock) ?
the second man’s side, side of train near cab
56
where are the starter batteries?
on the non drivers side between the fuel tank and the engine
57
where are the auxiliary batteries?
between the fuel tank and the engine?
58
where is the fuel tank?
on both sides across the train after the first bogey from the free end
59
where is the main air res and the air suspension res?
between the batteries
60
where is the local control start / stop (ESIS)
non drivers side after the starter batteries
61
where is the local stop/ pre heat buttons
drivers side after batteries
62
where is the donaldson air filter?
halfway down the train on drivers side
63
where is the BCU?
drivers side halfway down train
64
where is the silencer?
drivers side
65
where is the fire control unit with manual bottle ?
non drivers side next to engine
66
where is the radiator?

engine and aux heater
69
what are the types of bottles used in the fire system?
FFF foam and automatic fire bottle that can be operated manually and the manual fire bottle if the automatic bottle doesn’t work.
70
how does the fire system work if detects fire?
alarm bells sound hazard light illuminates in affected cab shuts down engine (affected one only) engine stop light illuminates auto fire bottles deploys at 3mph or below
71
what should you do if engine won’t shut down due to faulty ERS?
then manually isolate the fuel isolating cock
72
AFTER THE FIRE, what must you do after a fire is dealt with? why would you do these things?
- silence bells and turn off hazard light by operating the FIS (fire isolation switch) - extinguish engine stop light by operating Engine Start Isolation Switch (ESIS) this is located on the local control panel on non drivers side - when authority given move all passengers out of affected vehicle and place a competent person in there fire system now inoperative in that vehicle you would do the above so that you are alerted to any further possible problems
73
what does the aux batteries control?
all non essential items - GSMR - Door supply - interior lights - heaters
74
what does the starter batteries control?
All essential items - Fire System - TCA - Earthing - Local Control - Door Control - Brake - AWS/TPWS - Train Control - P.A - Wheel slip - remote supply
75
when would you and what happens if you need to operate TIS (Traction Interlock Switch)?
if you have brake release but are unable to take power you may need to TIS. Once operated driver must manually check all doors are closed and locked, buzzer will now be inactive (buzzer runs thru TIS) at end of journey TIS should go back to normal position.
76
what to do if ebs needs raising in leading cab or other than?
when EBS is activated, if fault is at home (driving can) move away, if fault is away (other than leading cab) stay home.
77
if guard has to dispatch without using bell buzzers codes due to TIS on how does he do it?
using a whistle and green flag.
78
how many times can you reset a circuit breaker that’s tripped on own authority?
3 times unless earthing mcb then only once
79
what happens if the fire system trips? how to amend after 3 resets?
lose fire integrity (light go off), engine & aux heater will shut down. engine stop light will illuminate. to fix - isolate engine to remove stop light
80
what happens if TCA trips?
loss of tca in local vehicle (rear tca not affected) transmission train and unit lights lit up in affected unit in other units will just show transmission train light, hazard warning light illuminates on affected vehicles
81
earthing mcb trips what happens?
no fault indication when tripped (only reset mcb once)
82
door control mcb trips what do you do?
loss of door control panel have to operate doors in other vehicle where not defective
83
brake control cb trips what do you do?
When tripped in either energised or de-energised cab you will have a full service brake application due to a brake in the brake safety loop. If tripped in rear cab raise EBS in energised cab to proceed. If tripped in energised cab either move away to rear cab for WDM or get assistance at the leading end. Both scenarios require EBS to be raised in energised cab to proceed.
84
what happens when AWS/TPWS trips? how to rectify after 3 resets
lose AWS/TPWS causing break in TW4 making a a full brake application must isolate AWS/Tpws continue line speed with competent driver or 60 without and 40 in poor vis
85
what happens if PA CB trips?
lose use of cab phone and PA
86
remote supply cb trips what happens ?
lose back up of batteries suppling power feed to mcb’s
87
what are the wet faults if an engine turns but won’t start?
low fuel low coolant low oil
88
what are the dry faults for if an engine won’t start ?
faulty starter motor faulty start button ESIS operated starter battery dead
89
what happens if the fire system cb trips?
loss of fire integrity - means engine & aux heater will shut down (engine stop light will illuminate) to remove stop light, isolate engine
