Q

What are youon (ようおん) sounds?

A

youon (ようおん) are contracted kana combinations that make sounds like kya / kyu / kyo.

ようおん

They are written by pairing an i-row kana, such as (ki) or (chi) with a small (ya), (yu), or (yo).

These combinations sound like:
キャ (kya), not キヤ (kiya).

チョ (cho), not チヨ (chiyo)
