1.status of messenger e.g. use role model or someone respected so message has an impact
2. quality of message:e.g. ensure message is detailed & knowledgeable & communication is relevant
3. characteristics of person being persuaded: e.g. might be intelligent enough to understand the message, but may not accept it.
4. the situation: make environment you are giving the message in comfortable e.g. have discussion in players faveourite coffee shop to convince gymnast to start flexibility exercises and make usre timing is right e.g. to persuade footballer to stop diving, do it after a match they won without diving
