Chapter 2 SG Flashcards

(11 cards)

1
Q

At altitude, the homeostasis of which essential variable is disturbed? What are the acute and chronic altitude illnesses are the consequences of the failure to maintain oxygen homeostasis?

A

O2 levels, acute illnesses: AMS, High altitude cerebral edema, High altitude Pulmonary Edema. Chronic illness: CMS

Q

How do the altitude illnesses differ from inflammatory or immune system sources of pathophysiology?

A

its a disturbance to our homeostasis, not and injury or an infection. Normal because we are alive

Q

Describe the three inflammatory processes

A

mobilize: activates immune and repair systems
organize: isolate and prepare area for repair
remodeling: depending on damage, the area is either regenerated or replaced

Q

Describe the three levels of immune protection

A

protective barriers: physical and chemical defenses (Skin, pH, etc.)
Innate immunity: phagocytes and microphages seek to destroy all invaders, good or bad
Acquired-adaptive immunity: killer cells trained to identify pathogens, antibodies (memory cells that train to fight and infection for the next time)

Q

If inflammation is designed to mobilize the response to injury and infections how might it cause more damage?

A

The system isn’t 100% perfect and can target healthy cells unintentionally.

Q

If you didn’t have the ability to fight infection, how might your life change?

A

You would have to be super careful around crowds, extremely hygienic, and create an environment that reflects that.

Q

What are the three types of prevention? Which is the most cost effective?

A

Primary: health prevention (diet/exercise)
Secondary: reduces developing disease risk and prevention (BP and cholesterol meds)
Tertiary: restores health and minimizes disease morbidity (cardiac rehabilitator and PT)
