Reinforcer
Anything that increases the likelihood of a behavior being repeated.
Ex: Giving candy for doing homework.
Punisher
Anything that decreases the likelihood of a behavior being repeated.
Ex: Getting detention for being late.
Reinforcement
Any consequence that strengthens or increases a behavior.
Ex: Positive = add something good; Negative = remove something bad.
Reinforcement Theory
Behavior is motivated by consequences — behaviors that are rewarded are repeated; those that aren’t, fade away.
Ex: Studying harder after getting good grades.
Continuous Reinforcement
Reinforcing a behavior every time it occurs — leads to fast learning but quick extinction.
Ex: Dog gets a treat every time it sits.
Partial (Intermittent) Reinforcement
Reinforcing a behavior only sometimes — slower learning but more resistant to extinction.
Ex: Dog only sometimes gets a treat for sitting.
