ECONOMIC INTER DEPENDANCE

- in 2010 Portugal hit the peak of its economic crisis (with tax increases and wage reductions) - whereas Brazil was booming - ergo flows of migrants from Portugal to Brazil increased - but since 2015 a downturn in the Brazilian economy due to global collape in comodoty prices ( oil ) has lead to increased visa applications for Brazilians wanting to move to Portugal

SOCIAL INTERDEPENDANCE

- cultural links are very active - diaspora groups work bi-laterally on arts festivals and educational exchanges - Portuguese unis are a main destination for Brazilian students with a scholarship

environmental interdependence with the USA

- USA remains the top destination country for Brazilian migrants (most are economic migrants, including an increasing number of highly qualified workers) - a range of environmental schemes are funded by the USA - USAID is the department of American government that helps with overseas development - in 2014 USAID signed a new 5 year bilateral agreement with Government of Brazil to support its efforts to conserve the Brazilian Amazon - USAID has developed the 'Sustainable Palm Oil' project in partnership with the Brazilian cosmetics firm Natura (plants organic palms on degraded land instead of clearing forests)
