How many rounds of division in mitosis?
1 round of division
Are genetically identical or varied cells made?
Genetically identical
Are diploid or haploid cells made?
Diploid
What is mitosis used for?
Growth- an organism gets bigger as more cells are produced
Replacing damaged cells- cells that are damaged can be replaced by new, identical cells
4 key stages of mitosis?
Prophase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase
What happens during prophase?
The chromosomes condense and become visible
The centrioles create spindle fibres which form between poles of the cell
Centrioles are pulled to opposite sides of the cell
What happens during metaphase?
The chromosomes align along the equator of the cell
The spindle fibres now attach to the centromere and chromatids
What happens during anaphase?
The centromere breaks
Spindle fibres get shorter and pull the chromatids to opposite poles of the cell
What happens during telophase?
The chromosomes become longer and thinner again
The spindle fibres disintegrate and the nuclear membrane reforms
The chromosomes uncoil, making them no longer visible
Chromatids become chromosomes
