Surveys Overview
Collect primary quantitative data from large groups.
Usually use structured questionnaires or interviews.
Aim to be representative and generalizable.
Conducting a Survey
1.Decide on a hypothesis – idea, theory, or question to investigate.
2.Operationalise concepts – turn abstract ideas into measurable forms.
3.Pilot study – small-scale test to identify problems.
Generalisability
Sample must represent wider population.
Not representative if:
-Sample is too small
-Sampling frame is incomplete
Sampling Methods
1.Random sampling: Every individual has an equal chance.
2.Systematic sampling: Pick names at regular intervals from the frame.
3.Stratified random sampling: Divide population into subgroups, then randomly sample each.
4.Quota sampling: Divide population into subgroups and select participants to meet quotas.
5.Snowball sampling: Start with a few participants → ask them to recruit others (used when sample frame is hard to access).
