A

It meant that the US would be joining the League of Nations and be in a Permanent Alliance. Senators known as Irreconciliables wanted to isolate. Strong Reservationalists wanted changes to make countries work together, before the US would join. Main senator rejecting was Henry Cabot Lodge

What role did the Espionage and Sedition Acts play during the war?

A

The act made it a crime to convey information intended to interfere with the war effort. Later the Sedition Act imposed harsh penalties for a wide range of dissenting speech. Led to Schenk V the US. Schenck was arrested for handing out anti draft pamphlets. The Supreme Court says if your speech presents a clear and present danger to the US it can be limited.

Fear of immigrants / dissent especially those who embraced communist ideology, fear was increased by the bombs mailed to key individuals in gov’t, leading to AG Palmer Conducting the “Palmer raid” over 4000 accused were arrested/tried/deported.

Hoovervilles were temporary poor towns built by people during the depression, it was named about Hoover because people blamed him for the depression.

After the Crash, people tried to withdraw money from their banks, banks could not produce money so they failed, this led to a run on banks and hundreds of banks failed, and thousands of people lost their savings.
