  • can be used to investigate instances of human behaviour that are rare and this helps establish typical behaviour by comparing to the rare / unusual
  • the complex interaction of many factors can be studied so can see the complexities of human behaviour
  • could mean further research as one case study may leas to the revision of an entire theory so could contribute to improving thereoies

Q

limitations of case study

A
  • difficult to generalise individual cases as each one has unique characteristics
  • often use recollection of past events and this evidence may be unreliable / inaccurate and lack validity
  • important ethical issues such as confidentiality
  • researchers may lack objectivity as they get to know the case , thereotical bias may lead them to overlook aspects of the findings . this means they could be subjective with their interpretations so results could be flawed
