What is reliability ?
Refers to how consistent findings are so reliable results are suggestive that you have found an accurate / valid result
What are the two types of reliability?
Internal and external
What is internal reliability ?
Extent to which a measure is consistent WITHIN itself and eaxh part should consistently measure the same thing
What is external reliability?
Consistency of measure over time across studies time situation and people
2 ways to assess relaibility
Test / retest
Inter observer reliability
What is test / retest ?
Testinf the same group of participants on more than one ocassion and they should have positive correlation to be reliable
This assesses external reliability over a period of time
What is inter observer reliability ?
Two seperate observers rate / cose the different types of behaviours at the same tome . They work independently and compare recordings at the end of the observation
This assesses external reliability across people
How to improve reliability in questionnaires ?
Change some questions - open to closed
Make questions clear and consise
Consistent response options
How to improve the reliabilty of interviews ?
Training for interviewers
Same interviewer used and phrased in the same way
Structured interviews with fixed questions rather than unstructured interviews
How to improve the reliability of experiments ?
Controlled conditions like a lab
Standardised
Control EVs and CVs
How to improve reliability in observations ?
Multiple trained observers
Video / record behaviour
Operationalise checklist
