what is a research aim ?
all research starts with an aim . a research aim is what the psychologist aims to find out by conducting the research . this is a clear and concise statement that is realistic
what is a hypotheses ?
hypotheses are used in experiments as they are a scientific way of investigating behaviour through testing
they predict the outcome of the research
what is an experimental / alternate hypothesis ?
predicts there will be a difference or relationship between two or more variables
- if the study is about correlation talk about relationships
- if the study is an experiment / observations / self report talk about difference / effect
example of experimental hypothesis
alcohol will significantly affect reaction times in seconds
example of alternate hypothesis
there will be a significant relationship between alcohol and reaction times in seconds
what is a null hypothesis ?
predicts there will be no difference or relationship found between two variables and if there is it is due to chance
null hypothesis example - experiment
alcohol will have no significant effect on reaction times in seconds and any effect will be due to chance
null hypothesis example - correlation
there will be no significant relationship between alcohol and reaction times in seconds and any relationship will be due to chance
what is directional hypothesis ?
predicts the direction of the difference / relationship such as “ men will drive faster than women “
what is non directional hypothesis ?
predicts a difference but not the direction of the difference such as “ difference in males and females”
