Windows Pre-Installation Environment (WinPE) - Lightweight version of windows used to install windows. It is also the program you need to run to reach WinRE.
WinRE
Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) - As you start installation process and enter WinPE near the bottom, instead of starting installation, there should be a button that says “repair your computer” clicking on this opens the WinRE with resources for troubleshooting and recovery
Options in WinRE: System Restore
If you have made a system restore point you can use this function to revert machine to that restore point.
Options in WinRE: Uninstall Update
If an update is causing system malfunctions, you can use this feature to uninstall/roll back an update.
Options in WinRE: System Image Recovery
If you made a system image you can use it to reimage your system. Can use programs such as Macrium Reflect 8 Free Edition or EaseUS Todo Backup Free to make system images that are compatible with windows.
Options in WinRE: Startup Repair
Looks at all your startup options, turns off most, and then tries to see if system will run. Better options exist.
Options in WinRE: Command Prompt
Opens a command prompt window.
Access Safeboot with System Configuration
System configuration -> Boot tab -> check box for safe boot
Safe boot: Minimal
Opens very few things. gets you to a bare bone desktop.
Safe boot: Alternate Shell
Allows system to boot straight into a command prompt.
Safe boot: Active Directory Repair
If system is a part of an Active Directory Domain, logs into a windows server, one-stop shop to get reconnected and figure out what’s wrong.
Safe boot: Network
Turns on network card. Most commonly used safe boot additive. Allows access to internet to download drivers
Safe boot: No GUI boot
Wont see startup. Minimal interface until log in screen.
Safe boot: Basic Video
Pretty commonly used, especially if videocard is bad. 800x600 bare bone display.
Safe Boot: OS Boot Information
Not always very important. Displays boot info on startup.
Access Safeboot with settings
Settings -> Recovery -> Advanced Start up -> Restart now.
Access Safe boot on start up
Boot up windows when you see blue window shut off machine. Do this until you have shut off the machine 3 times. Automatic Repair screen appears.
Automatic Repair Screen to Safe boot
From the automatic repair screen press advanced options. Trouble shoot. Adv Options. Start up settings.
Start Up Settings: (F1) Enable Debugging
Set up info in a debugging tool that allows you to step through a lot of things
Start Up Settings: (F2) Enable Boot Logging
Every program that attempts to boot up will be logged as starting and logging again if/when successful. start-up will than move onto the next program, rinse repeat.
Start Up Settings: (F3) Enable Low Resolution Video
800x600 display. Go to if video drivers are malfunctioning.
Start Up Settings: (F4) Enable Safe Mode
Turns off all kinds of swap files and other features. Brings it down to very simple version of windows. useful if having driver issues.
Start Up Settings: (F5) Enable Safe Mode With Networking
Same as safe mode startup except it allows networking card to be turned on so you have access to the internet to download drivers.
Start Up Settings: (F6) Enable Safe Mode With Command Prompt
Same as safe mode, but also opens a command prompt after start up.
