Where can users get Android apps?
Google Play is the primary source of Android apps. The Apple App Store provides access to iOS apps.
Android phones and customization
Androids are much more customizable when compared to iOS phones.
iOS works one way across their phones, and it works like a tank.
Notifications (Android)
Pulls down from top of screen. Notification are displayed here. Pull down again to get to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Flashlight etc.
Gestures (Android)
Not many. Swipe left right to change screens. Bottom of screen sweep up for all apps. need third party app to add gestures to android.
Applications (Android)
Found in google play store. Not as strict controls as compared to iOS app store. Some risk when downloading apps from google play store.
GPS and cellular location services (Android)
Some apps may ask for these permissions. These permissions show where your phone is located.
Permissions (Android)
All applications need some permissions. Location, notification, contacts etc.
Settings -> Apps -> Click on an app to see what permissions it is using. Can also force an app closed from this screen..
Accounts (Android)
compelled to make a google account to associate with phone.
Settings -> accounts can add more accounts
Backup (Android)
Settings -> backup.
Have to turn on back up. Backs up phone data to google drive.
Factory Data Reset (Android)
Must delete ALL accounts off of phone before doing a factory reset. Failure to do so will result in bricking the phone. This is a safety feature so that if someone steals your phone they cant factory reset and use it.
Location (Android)
Settings -> location
Location has three modes
High Accuracy - Uses anything and everything to determine location. Consumes more battery.
Battery Saving - Won’t use GPS
Device only - Will only use GPS
Desktop/Home Screen (iOS)
All applications installed show up here. unlike android no separate location for all applications.
Notification Center (iOS)
Swipe down from top. Shows notifcations/alerts
Spotlight (iOS)
Swipe from left to right. Shows widgets.
Control Center (iOS)
Swipe up from bottom. Newer versions of iOS swipe down from the top right. Wi-Fi, Flashlight, Bluetooth, Etc.
Double Tap Home Screen (iOS)
Shows all open applications
App Store (iOS)
This is where iOS users get their applications. Hold down on an existing app and press the x to uninstall an app.
Permissions (iOS)
iOS applications need permissions.
Settings -> scroll down
Click app to see permissions app wants.
Accounts (iOS)
Have to make an iCloud account when you first get phone. Can add accounts.
Backup (iOS)
settings -> iCloud
Shows all apps being backed up.
Recovering iPhone is trivial compared to android. Just have to log in with iCloud account.
Location (iOS)
Settings -> privacy
Shows which devices using location. Can also turn it on/off.
