2) increases effort applied by the performer and allows performance to be monitored
3) improve persistance when a task becomes difficult or failure
4) performer becomes increasingly motivated to learn and apply different approaches to learning
5) successful completion of a goal will help raise confidence and self efficacy
6) goals can help break down performance into manageable tasks helping to control arousal

Measurable- goals must be assesed and and measureable
Acheiveable- goals that performer and coaches have shared are more likely to be achieved
Recorded- goals should be recorded so progress can be monitored
time-phased- goals should be split into short term goals then long term
