What is the CHP Explorer Program?
An official departmental program administered in cooperation with the Learning for Life Program
It is designed to provide youth with opportunities to learn about law enforcement.
How many levels of explorer training are there?
Four levels

What is the duration of Level I training?
24 hours
Conducted at the Area or Division level and serves as a prerequisite for ride-along certification.

18 years and older
Conducted at the CHP Academy as a seven-day, live-in Academy.

20 and 21 years old
This is the final training component in preparation for explorers transitioning to cadet.
What must happen to donations received by the explorer post?
Deposited into the post’s account within 72 hours
This ensures timely management of funds.
Who is the Post Coordinator?
At least the rank of sergeant
Responsible for supervisory duties of the post advisor(s) and the CHP Explorer Program.
What is the role of the Post Advisor?
Appointed sworn departmental employee at least one rank below the post coordinator
There is only one post advisor for each explorer post.
What is the minimum number of members for an Advisory Committee?
Five permanent members
This committee meets at least annually to discuss explorer post activities.
What is required to charter a new explorer post?
The annual charter fee is established by Learning for Life.
What is the age range for explorers in the program?
15 to 20 years old
Explorers may continue membership until the end of the chartered year after turning 21.
What is the minimum GPA requirement for explorers enrolled in school?
2.0 or higher
This is necessary to maintain good standing in the program.
