Give me a Brief summary of the ISM code?

A

The ISM codes mission is to ensure safe operations and prevent pollution from shipping. It outlines the companies responsibility, the Safety management system must be approved by the Administration. As well as detail including but not limited to DPA, ensures seafarers are trained and medically fit, emergency preparedness and who to report incidents to, that ships is maintained as per rules and regulations.

A

The SMS covers policies, procedures, responsibilities and emergency plans. It ensures the company actively manages risks, provides clear instructions to protect human and marine life as well as the environment.

Who can issue a Non-Conformity?

A

12 COMPANY VERIFICATION, REVIEW AND EVALUATION

Flag Administration: The national authority of the country where the ship is registered.

Recognized Organization (RO): A classification society (e.g., Lloyd’s Register, DNV, ABS) authorized by the Administration to perform audits.

Internal Auditors: The company itself (designated personnel) must audit its own SMS and can/should issue internal non-conformities for corrective action.

Port State Control (PSC): While they mainly verify certificates, they can identify and record major non-conformities during inspections.
