What principle does self-defence operate under?

The common law defence of self-defence, the common law defence of defence of property and the defence in Section 3 of the criminal law act 1967 (use of force in making an arrest/ to prevent a crime) all operate under the same principle. This principle is contained in Section 76 of the criminal justice and immigration act 2008.
