Q

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

A
  1. Employs powerful magnets that produce a magnetic field
  2. Causes protein spins in hydrogen protons to align to the magnetic field polarization
  3. Scanner sends radio waves that knocks aligned protons out of their equilibrium
  4. When radio waves are turned off, the protons relax back to their original alignment (releasing signals at the same time)
  5. Sensor detects these signals and uses it to produce a high spatial resolution, 3D image of brain structure

Q

CT

A

Pros: non-invasive, high spatial resolution (clear and detailed)
Cons: can’t use on people with metals inside their body or with claustrophobia, no temporal resolution (doesn’t show function)
Implication: can be used to explore other psychological ideas (neuroplasticity and localization of function)
