Methoxyflurane is a volatile, self-administered inhalational analgesic (CNS depressant)
at low concentrations and is indicated for short-term pain relief.

• Pre-hospital pain relief where narcotics are contraindicated or not appropriate

Contraindications of Methoxyflurane?

Answer 3

• Family history of malignant hyperthermia
• Pre-existing renal disease or impairment
• Current use of tetracycline antibiotics.
• Exceeding total dose of 6ml in 24hr or 15ml in 7 days

Cautions of Methoxyflurane?

• Self-administered (hand-held) by pt
• Pre-eclampsia

Side Effects of Methoxyflurane?

Answer 5

• Drowsiness
• Decreased in blood pressure and bradycardia
• Exceeding the maximum total doses may lead to renal toxicity

Dosing Regimes of Methoxyflurane?

Answer 6

Analgesia
- Adults = 3ml INH, repeating once at 25mins to a max of 6ml
- Paeds = 3ml INH, repeating once at 25mins to a max of 6ml

Onset and duration of Methoxyflurane?

• Onset = 8-10 breaths
• Duration = approximately 25mins
