What are the 5 models of communication
Linear model
Include components of sender, message, channel and receiver
Communication involves a sender – someone trying to communicate message – and receiver, intended recipient of message – then channel through which message sent
Environmental noise can influence how message received
Explains one-way communication but struggles to explain more complex communication
Interactional Model
Takes into account that communication involves interaction
Follows same principles as above yet recipient can also send message back via same or different channel
Still doesn’t explain complex communication
transactional model
People can communicate simultaneously
People in communication act as senders and receivers at same time
Communicating via channels which can still be influenced by environmental noise
Creates shared meaning of world
Westley and Maclean’s model
Have sender and receiver, yet, channel can control or change type of messages being sent
Ex. Twitter vs snap vs email
Channel can also be a gatekeeper
Proposes that personal characteristics of receiver influences how they receive message
Receiver can send message back
Dance’s helical spiral model
Proposed communication is a never-ending, expanding spiral
As we get older our communication gets more complex
More of a metaphorical model
