Location of Heart in mammals
Thoracic cavity surrounded by the mediastinum. usually located along median plane.
Location of heart in birds and reptiles
thoracoabdominal region
The dogs heart
located btw ribs 3 and 6 or from OCS 3 to 5
The bovine heart
heart extends from the second ICS (or the following rib) to the fifth intercostal space.
The horse heart
The heart extends from the second to fifth/sixth intercostal spaces (Rib 2 to 6/7).
The Pig heart
The heart occupies the ventral half of the thoracic cavity, extending between the second and fifth ribs.
Pericardium
serous membrane that covers the heart and forms a cavity. W/I mediastinum
paraconal interventricular and subsinuosal interventricular grooves.
Coronary groove that separates atria and ventricles.
Endocardium
innermost layer of the membrane that is composed of simple squamos epithelium.
Middle layer of the cardiac membrane
Muscular layer formed by cardiac muscles
Outer layer of cardiac membrane
Serous covering; the visceral pericardium
Interatrial Septum
what separates the atria
Interventricular septum
what separates the ventricles
Right side of the heart pumps
deoxygenated blood
Left side of the heart pumps
oxygenated blood
Atrias
open into respective ventricles via atroventricular opening
Right atrium
Receives deoxygenated blood from Cranial and Caudal vena cava
Intervenous tubercle
mound btw cranial and caudal vena cava that directs blood and prevents turbulence inside Right Atrium
Fossa Ovalis
Caudal to intervenous tubercle and provision for bypassing the lungs in fetal stages
Opening of the coronary sinus
Located along the right atriu mwall.
Pectinate Muscles
thickned interlacing tripes of cardiac mucles on the innerside of the atrial wall
Right azygous vein
opens at the entrance of the cranial vena cava into the right atrium
Right Ventricle
Receives deoxygenated blood from right atrium
Tricuspid valve
guards the right atrioventricular opening.
