Who created classical conditioning?
Ivan Pavlov
What is classical conditioning?
A type of learning the connects 2+ stimuli to anticipate events
What is behaviorism? Who started it?
John B. Watson started this and it is the belief that [psychology should be an objective that studies behavior without references to mental processes.
How did pavlov do his experiment with classical conditioning?
He locked dogs in a small room, locked them up and attached a device to collect/measure saliva. He rung a bell (?) then gave them food right after it, eventually they associated the neutral stimulus with the unconditioned stimulus, creating a conditioned response.
What is a neutral stimuli?
Events/things we see or hear but don’t associate with stimulus
What is a unconditioned response?
an unlearned, naturally occurring response to an unconditioned stimulus.
What is a unconditioned stimulus?
a stimulus that unconciously triggers an unconditional response
What is a conditioned response?
A learned response to neutral stimulus
What is a conditioned stimulus?
an originally unconditioned stimulus comes to trigger a conditioned response due to a neutral stimulus
What is delayed acquisition?
A short break between US and NS
Is neutral stimulus first or second?
Always first
What is acquisition?
It is the period when a response is being learned, such as when a neutral stimulus becomes a conditioned stimulus
What is high order conditioning?
Conditioned stimulus is paired with a new neutral stimulus. creating a weaker 2nd conditioned stimulus
What is extinction?
The diminishing of conditioned response (US doesn’t follow CS).
What is spontaneous recovery?
Reappearance of an extinguished conditioned response
What is generalization?
The tendency for a stimuli similar to conditioned stimuli to elicit a similar response
What is discrimination?
an irrelevant stimuli; having the ability to distinguish the difference between a conditioned stimulus and another stimulus
