Q

Anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments

A

Ligamentos cruzados, anterior y posterior

Both of these ligaments control the forward and
backward movement of the knee. The anterior
cruciate ligament (ACL) prevents the shinbone
from sliding forward past the thigh bone. The
posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) prevents the
shinbone from moving too far backward.

A

Mandíbula

Generally referring to the lower jawbone, or
mandible, it is connected to the lower part of the
skull and shapes the lower face, forming the
structure of the mouth.

23
Q

Joint

A

Articulación*

The fixed or movable part where two structures,
especially bones, meet.

*Also correct: coyuntura

24
Q

Kyphosis

A

Cifosis

Outward spinal curvature causing a hunchback,
usually in the top part of the back.

25
Laminectomy
Laminectomía Surgical removal of the back of a vertebra to provide access to the spinal cord and relieve pressure on the nerves.
26
Ligament
Ligamento Tough, fibrous, flexible connective tissue that holds together a joint by connecting bones or cartilages.
27
Lordosis
Lordosis Inward spinal curvature.
28
Lumbar spine
Columna lumbar Located in the mid to lower back, it is made up of 5 vertebral bodies stacked one on top of the other, separated by vertebral disks.
29
Meniscus
Menisco A C-shaped piece of cartilage in the knee that acts as a cushion between the thigh bone and the shin bone, providing shock absorption and stability to the joint.
30
Metacarpals and Metatarsals
Metacarpianos y Metatarsianos Metacarpals are the five hand bones, and metatarsals are the five toe bones.
31
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
Resonancia magnética* Magnetic resonance imaging is a diagnostic study using a large tube-shaped machine to capture images of internal structures with magnetic fields and radio waves. *In Spanish is usually not necessary to add the word imagen on MRI.
32
Myeloma
Mieloma Bone marrow tumor, malignant in nature.
33
Orthopedics
Ortopedia The branch of medicine focused on identification, diagnosis, and treatment of bone and muscle diseases and deformities.
34
Osteoarthritis
Osteoartritis A common disorder found in the elderly and marked by degeneration of joint cartilage and bone.
35
Osteomyelitis
Osteomielitis Bone or bone marrow inflammation, generally caused by an infection.
36
Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis Common condition found in older women, marked by brittle bones made fragile and susceptible to fracture by loss of tissue.
37
Osteosarcoma
Osteosarcoma Malignant tumor on the bone, marked by increased number of osteoblasts.
38
Patella
Rótula Kneecap.
39
Phalanges
Falanges Plural form of phalanx, and refers to the toe and finger bones.
40
Radius and Ulna
Radio y cúbito These bones are located in the forearm, running parallel to each other. They connect the upper arm bone, the humerus, to the hand.
41
Ribcage
Caja torácica The bony structure in the chest made up of ribs and the sternum, which protects the heart and lungs while also supporting the upper body and aiding in breathing.
42
