PSYC1200 > CHAPTER 4.23: Sound Localization > Flashcards
what is sound localization?
process of identifying where a sound is coming from
what are the 2 main mechanisms used to achieve sound localization?
-interaural time differences
-sound shadow
what is interaural time differences
the difference in time it takes for a sound to reach both our ears.
ex. what hits ur left ear first comes from the left side of space
what is sound shadow
referring to intensity of sound. as sound travels it decays, and your body will absorb some of that sound leaving a lower intensity sound “shadow”
how does outer ear determine elevation?
folds of the pinna affects intensity of frequencies based on the elevation they come from!
